Stopping young men from taking extremists’ path

Extremist groups are drawing rather uninformed young people to their twisted interpretation of religion
Stopping young men from taking extremists’ path

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina struck the right note when she urged parents, teachers and government officials to watch closely the movements of their children. The world is currently witnessing the most serious kind of extremism and fanaticism and the groups that base their ideologies on them may quickly draw these rather uninformed young people to their twisted interpretation of religion. Bangladesh is not outside the world and young men from here also are getting to these local and international fundamentalists’ groups, thanks to the more open social form of media like Facebook, etc.
The people who unleashed terror in Gulshan’s Holey Artisan Bakery in the capital recently were all young and members of well-to-do families. They used to go to modern educational institutions in the capital unlike the close environment of religious schools and colleges known as madrassahs. Yet these were the young men who killed more than 20 innocent people on that fateful night simply because they were foreign nationals and their religion was not Islam.
At a time when there is an apprehension worldwide that twenty-first century would be mostly dominated by fundamentalist and  extremist ideologies there  are reasons to be afraid about the fate of our young ones. That is why the call of the prime minister to the guardians for providing names and addresses of their missing or delayed children is very important and the call needs to be paid serious attention from the society at large, not just the guardians and teachers and government officials.
In her speech during two recent separate videoconferencing events with a cross-section of people of 32 districts from her official residence Ganobhaban when the prime minister made these remarks, Sheikh Hasina also said it is very crucial to find out the leaders who are misleading the fresh young mind towards the paths of violence and destruction in the most inhuman ways.
Now the question that should be asked here: why should our young students increasingly tread the deviated path and lay down their valuable lives indiscriminately getting derailed from the right path? Besides remaining vigilant about the movements of our men, it is also very important, therefore, to make a through soul searching on these questions, if we at all sincerely want to stop our young people to be drawn to the extreme and fanatic interpretation of religion. The sooner we do this the better.
