JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure:
An Entertaining Anime

Continuing from the renewal of the classic shounen manga, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure returned in 2014 with a completely new adaptation for its third arc, Stardust Crusaders. This time, we follow Jotaro Kujo, the grandson of Joseph Joestar from the previous arc. Joined by his grandfather and a motley crew of warriors, they must journey thousands of miles to hunt down an old villain for the family. The thought-to-be dead Dio Brando had resurfaced as a true vampire, and with that, he instilled mysterious powers to random individuals around the world, called Stands. Jotaro and his friends must kill Dio soon to save his mother from being destroyed from within by her own Stand.
The anime spreads across a whopping 48 episodes, split in half with a whole season’s break in between. The first 24 episodes cover the journey to Egypt, where Dio’s base is, and probably contains the most consistent quality throughout the show. It has its fair share of humorous moments, but this is mostly an action series, and it pulls off the action very well. The music is top-notch and David Production really put in their all to adapt the weird flair from the original manga as accurately as they could. The characters are also a treat to watch, whether goofing up hard or giving it their all in battle.
However, the second half of the show is where things get a little weird. The Egypt arc starts off rather weak with some of the series’ more dull and strange fights, and this could possibly bore some people and have them longing for the end sooner. Break in consistency aside, the last few episodes building towards the finale have this part’s best fights, with the animation quality really shining through. It also mixes in a good, but sudden dose of tragedy to really hit fans hard. All in all, Stardust Crusaders is quite the worthwhile journey for some people, and it’s a great starting point for others to get into the bizarre world of JoJo. n
