The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) prepared the domestic calendar for the new season, keeping the home series against England in mind, despite the uncertainty hovering over the series.
The England Cricket Board (ECB) showed their concern over the recent terror attack in a Spanish café in Gulshan on July 1 but the BCB is optimistic about the fate of the series.
They however tried to arrange an adequate matches for the players through the domestic cricket to get them ready for the series.
“We haven’t been in the cricket for a long time. Before going to main event, we need to focus on the fitness of the players. And so we need three weeks to get them fit,” Khaled Mahmud, the national team manager said yesterday.
If the series gets the nod finally, Bangladesh will play Test cricket after 15 months, a huge gap which is predicted to make an adverse impact on the players. Keeping that fact in the mind, the team management wants the players to play a good number of longer version cricket ahead of the series.
“Before entering into England series, we want our boys to play a good number of matches in longer version format. We have BCL and NCL ahead and it could give them an opportunity to have longer version matches. We want any of one tournament to start ahead of the series so that the players could play there,” Mahmud, also the director of the BCB told the reporters at his Mirpur DOHS office.
Also the former skipper of the country, Mahmud believed the home advantage will reduce the disadvantage of not playing Test cricket for a long to some extent. He said the players are professional enough to cope with any adverse situation.
“We know we have a limitation in Test. We played well in the last Test series. The current international players are much more professional who knows what to do when the situation is not in favour,” Sujon, also the chairman of BCB game development said.
He said that their main task in England series will be restoring the tempo which they have been carrying on for the last two years.
“Our boys have been out of the games for a long time. They will start a new season with the England series. We have been playing a good cricket for the last two years. I think that our big task will be restoring the rhythm which we have been carrying on.”
Regarding the uncertainty over the series following a terror attack in Bangladesh, Sujon said he is confident that England won’t pull out of the series.
“Officially England don’t inform anything yet. All we are embarrassed what happened in the country. In sports, we are different than others (nations). Earlier we had organised World Cup in such type of the situation. We are not much worried about it. After such incident, England may be worried about. But I believe everything will be okay before the series. We have to keep in mind that this series is an opportunity for both the teams. Keeping aside the negative things we have to think positive that England will come as per the schedule.”
Ahead of the England series, Bangladesh will start their training camp, which will be opened with fitness session on July 20. The BCB is trying to appoint a new bowling before the training starts.
When asked about the new bowling coach, Mahmud said, “After Heath Streak left the country we had kept in mind that we have to bring someone for the post. And so, we have prepared a short list preferring some coaches after holding a meeting, where CEO had been given responsibility to negotiate with them. I don’t know actually how the things are progressing.”
“I’m in quite dark about this matter. Actually we had a responsibility to shorten the list with the probable coaches, who are the ideal for Bangladesh cricket. Earlier we talked to Aaqib Javed but we could not rope in. Chaminda Vaas, Andy Bickel and some others are in our list. I don’t know whether he contacts them.”
