The country experienced a long Eid vacation which stretched from July 01 to 10. This is a great opportunity for the city dwellers to visit their village homes to observe Eid with their near and dear ones. Another group poured in the tourist spots of Bangladesh and the affluent section went abroad to refresh their body and mind. Only 4th July was the opening day which the government declared holiday to lengthen the list of holidays. It is no doubt a good decision in one sense as the government staff and other staff of different organizations and corporations need to refresh their body and mind to resume their works with renewed vigor and energy after Eid. Our body needs food, similarly our mind also which we seem not to give importance. The developed countries evaluate this mental food of humans with great care and accordingly they plan their activities. Probably we have also started to think over the issue.
This longer vacation gave the city dwellers a sigh of relief to move around the city of Dhaka freely as the whole city experienced a thin traffic. It also helped the people to leave the city with much easier way as all of them did not leave the city at a time because they had options. They did not need to throng at the bus, train or launch stations at a time to create an abnormal situation. Their ranging to leave Dhaka for home started on 30 June and continued to till the Eid day on 07 July. Of course, post Eid vacation proved to be shorter to start for the city. Students who belong to secondary level could not enjoy the leave without any tension as their first terminal examination starts from 11 July. Examination means a kind of tension for the students. Moreover, they had to undergo tension how to get to Dhaka just after Eid as it became very difficult for the guardians to manage tickets to get back to Dhaka. The decision makers would have scheduled the dates giving a judicious thought. Students and their guardians might have good opportunity to visit their village homes but coming back to the city just after Eid to sit for the examination was not sure, it meant double tension for the students. Many guardians could not avail the opportunity to meet their near and dear ones in the villages even though they had a great desire to do it and long vacation. And the students could not meet their grandparents and see the calm and beautiful greenery of the village due to their examination. Examinations could have been conducted during the Ramadan vacation in this case. The closing of schools during the whole Ramadan vacation may not be a good decision every year. Till half of Ramadan schools could be opened.
When I was at Rajuk College I observed that Rajuk College completed its first term examination in March or April but other schools and colleges would take the same test on May or June. Now it happens that one brother of a family reads in Rajuk college and another one in Uttara High School. In that case, the family cannot arrange any social function or gathering like marriage as one member of the family will have to be busy with examination. Different educational institutions would take the examinations in different times of the year following the directives of their respective teacher organizations. Thus it created a haphazard situation which impelled me to produce a series of columns to hold the first term, second term and final examinations at the same date across the country so that the whole nation knows when the first term examination, second term and final examinations take place and accordingly family and social gatherings can be arranged so that students can attend them with free mind. I advocated that it would not require any extra money but would give huge benefit to the students and it would bring a harmony in the education sector. The government now takes this test at the same date all over the country which is very good and the number of examinations has also been reduced to two instead of three. Hats off to the planners.
Nine days long vacation gave a relieving picture to the city of Dhaka and the remaining city dwellers enjoyed free movement less gathering in the market. They heaved a sigh of relief after a pretty long one year. But our offices and organizations and different departments must open their office on time and start giving usual service to the people. Unfortunately, it hardly happens in our country. The officials take another several days to resume their usual activities with full energy and vigour which causes work jam and the people get deprived of their rights. This tendency must be avoided. The westerners and some Asian countries enjoy vacations to reenergize themselves and to work with double energy and rhythm just after the holidays. We must have that spirit as well.
Another sad thing happens every year when we see long vacations. A huge number of accidents take place both in the cities and highways mainly due to reckless driving, ignoring traffic rules by the drivers and the pedestrians’ indifference or ignorance to traffic rules. It must start from the individual level that traffic rules must be obeyed properly. People must not cross the busy roads until there is a signal. Thanks to the metropolitan police which took some laudable steps this year to minimize the accidents in the city during the vacation when people drive the cars recklessly. But in the highway the old game prevailed. Hope next year the scene will see a sea change.
