Thousands of fishermen in Noakhali and Laxmipur districts are all smiles as a huge catches of popular fish hilsa is being netted in the Meghna River.
The Meghna River sees a large number of boats carrying fish, much to the happiness of the fishermen who have been passing hard times for over a month.
During recent visits to Char Alexander under Ramgati upazila, Chairmanghat, Tomuruddin, Nelchaera and Hatiya, this correspondent found fish is being loaded into small boats for supply to fish landing station.
After buying fish from there, the wholesalers are supplying it to different areas of the country. Fisherman Kalam Munshi of Char Alexander said, “We are happy as huge fish is being caught. We hope the situation will continue throughout the month if there is no natural calamity."
Another fisherman Enayetullah said, "We caught a good amount of hilsa from the river.”
He earned a good amount of money by selling hilsa.
Hilsa price in the local markets remains high. Its price in wholesale markets now ranges between Tk 1000 to 1500 per piece depending on size, which was Tk 2000 to 2500 last year.
Laxmipur district fisheries officer Mohibullah said fishermen of the area have passed tough times due to scarcity of hilsa but they are now happy with the amount of hilsa being netted in the river.
