Tourism industry fears huge losses after militant attacks

STAFF REPORTER

Many foreign tourists have cancelled visits to Bangladesh after militant attacks in Gulshan and Sholakia. Travel agencies and tour operators said tourists are cancelling travel bookings sensing lack of security for them. Concerned people think tourism industry would suffer loss after the attacks.
Bangladesh is hoping for 3 lakhs foreign tourists in the next three years.
Besides, the government has declared the current year as Tourism Year in a bid to help boost Bangladesh's tourism sector.
Tour operators apprehend militant attacks a barrier to the government’s plan to attract more visitors in the country.
15 first-row tour operators said after the recent attacks foreign tourists have started calling off visits in the country. Visitors who were supposed to visit the country in September have started making contact to cancel visits.
Taufiq Rahman, director of Tour Operators Association of Bangladesh (TOAB), said tourism sector will be terribly hurt this year. “Around 70-80 per cent foreign tours this year might be cancelled,” he said.
In the circumstances, Tour Operators Association of Bangladesh (TOAB) demanded positive campaigning about tourism sector in the country both in home and abroad.
Taufiq Uddin Ahmed, president of TOAB said: “Tourism board and tour operators would take initiative for ensuring security for the tourists. We hope would be able to overcome the situation.”
Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Rashed Khan Menon recently said at present the tourism sector accounts for 2.4 per cent of the GDP in Bangladesh and it would be doubled by 2018.
Earlier in the last year, tourism industry in the country witnessed negative impact after two citizens of Italy and Japan were killed.
