River erosion wont affect Padma Bridge construction: Quader

Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader yesterday said river erosion could not hamper the construction work of the main structure of the Padma Bridge.
Precautionary measures have already been taken to halt the erosion in the Padma Bridge site. Piling of the main parts of the bridge would start on scheduled time in next October, said the minister while visiting the Padma Bridge Project area at Mawa in Munshiganj yesterday afternoon.
In the last few days, nearly 150 feet long and 10 feet wide areas at three places in the downstream of the main bridge has been devoured by the Padma River. Some piling instruments and materials of bridge construction also fell into the water due to the sudden collapse of embankment.
Talking to the newsmen, Obaidul Quader said the erosion which has already taken place is not a problem. During rainy season river erosion took place in the Padma River but we have taken sufficient measures in this regard. Five lakh sand bags have been kept ready to protect the erosion while 20 thousand sand sacks have already been thrown into the river. If required, more cautionary measures would be taken, he added.
