Flood turns worse leaving 60,000 marooned

Kurigram: The onrush of water from the upstream and incessant rainfalls has turned the flood situation worse in six upazilas of the district, rendering over 60,000 people marooned, reports UNB. The affected upazilas are Kurigran Sadar, Nageshwari, Ulipur, Chilmari, Roumari and Razibpur. According to the district’s Water Development Board (WDB), more than 150 villages have gone under water following the surging water level in the Brahmaputra River. The water in the Brahmaputra is flowing 31 centimetres above its danger mark while that of the Dudhkumar one centimetre over the red line. Meanwhile, the water levels in the Dharala and Tista Rivers have marked a fall by four centimeters and nine centimeters respectively. At least 70 people lost their homes due to the riverbank erosion in the char (shoal emerged from the riverbed) areas of the district. In Jamalpur, district administration distributed dry food among the flood hit poor people in Patharshi union under Islampur upazila of the district yesterday, reports BSS. Deputy Commissioner Shahabuddin Khan distributed the food among 100 poor families of the union. The low laying areas in Patharshi, Kulkandi, Belgachha, Chinaduli and Noarpara union under Islampur upazila were inundated by the flood water. New areas of those unions inundated by flood water yesterday.
