The attack in Kishoreganj's Sholakia was aimed at creating panic among the people that would eventually break the power to protest. The attackers could then enforce their ideals, Sholakia Imam Maulana Farid Uddin Masud has said. Talking to The Independent, he said: “They (The attackers) cannot establish their ideals normally in any country or in a society. So they feel that they would first have to weaken people’s minds by launching attacks that would help them achieve their devilish target. The way they kill and the places they choose to attack, panic spreads among people fast.” Asked whether the terrorists want to establish Shari’a (Islamic law) in the country, he said the attackers would never establish Islam. “And I doubt that people leading the terrorists have Islam in their hearts. If the attackers had minimum knowledge of Islam, they would not have attacked the Eid prayer ground. It proves that they don’t have Islam in their hearts,” he added.
“People leading the terrorists to create panic are insane and we, guardians and the education system are responsible for their insanity. To remove the misconception about Islam, Islamic scholars must play a greater role. As the terror groups are becoming insane in the shade of religion, the real nature of religion must be brought to light so that they can know what religion is,” Maulana Masud said. Asked whether he has been receiving threats from terrorist groups after he floated the idea of issuing a fatwa endorsed by 100,000 Islamic scholars against militancy, the Sholakia Imam said: “It is not new that I am getting death threats. Threats have been coming ever since I protested flying the national flag on Mujahid and Nizami’s cars.
