On May 6, Kunming was ranked third on the 2016 list of best summer resort cities worldwide. Also, in mid-June, the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Liveable Cities Research Report pronounced Kunming the No. 2 most liveable city in China, while on June 24, Kunming was again recognised as one of the “best summer resort cities in China” during the 2016 Summer Resort Tourism Industry Summit held in Changchun. All these honours showered upon Kunming over the last two months.
The pleasant weather and fresh air justifies Kunming’s fame as a liveable summer resort city. According to Li Xiaopeng, head of the Kunming Meteorological Observatory, the city features an annual average temperature of 16.5 degrees Celsius, an annual average rainfall of 1,450 millimetres and a yearly frost-free period of 278 days. Located on a low-latitude plateau, Kunming has a humid subtropical climate. It is neither too hot in summer nor too cold in winter in most parts of this city ——hence the nickname “Spring City”.
Li Xiaopeng enumerated Kunming’s five climatic characteristics that make for a liveable city. The first of these is that the spring is warm with high daily temperature variations, while the second is a mild summer that sees 60 percent of the cities yearly precipitation. The third point is that autumn is cool and crisp with calm winds. The winter in Kunming is free from severe cold and features plenty of sunshine, while the fifth characteristic is the city’s distinct dry and wet seasons.
