India managed to avoid the ignominious 3-0 Banglawash, thanks to fifties from both Shikhar Dhawan and Indian skipper MS Dhoni, by securing a 77-run victory over Bangladesh in the third ODI at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium yesterday.
Indian bowlers, backed by a formidable 317 for six, put up a disciplined performance to wrap up Bangladesh’s innings for 240 in 47 overs to make the series 2-1 and prevented their side from being whitewashed by any subcontinent team since Sri Lanka in 1997. Dhawan’s fluent 75 and Dhoni’s patient 69 set up the platform for India’s mammoth total which left Bangladesh out of gas while chasing the target.
Despite losing the match, Bangladesh retained its seventh place in the ICC ODI rankings and are all set to play the Champions Trophy in England in 2017, according to a press release issued by ICC yesterday.
As it was predicted, Mustafizur Rahman, the new pace sensation of Bangladesh, was awarded man of the series for his record 13 wickets in the series. Mustafizur followed up his five for 50 and six for 43 with two for 57 in the third match. India sensed an easy victory once Dhawal Kulkari trapped Tamim Iqbal (5) in front of the wicket. Soumya Sarkar showed a glimpse of his talent and mesmerised the spectators with an array of strokes. His 54-run stand with Litton Das kept Bangladesh in the hunt before he played one stroke too many and was caught at mid-on. His 40 off 34 came with the help of five fours and two sixes.
Bangladesh were still in the match at that time, but they were soon crippled by the fall of wickets at regular intervals. Two of their best batsmen, Mushfiqur Rahim (24) and Shakib Al Hasan (20), gave away their wickets to hasten the defeat. Sabbir Rahman was the highest scorer with 43, while Litton Das made 34.
For India, Suresh Raina's part time off-spin came good as he bagged three for 45. Dhawal Kulkarni ( two for 34) and Ravichandran Ashwin (two for 35) played their parts to avoid a series whitewash.
Earlier, Rohit Sharma gave India a fluent start with run-a-ball 29, while Virat Kohli contributed 25 runs. Unlike the first two matches, India showed more resilience and composure in dealing with the left-arm fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman. His off-cutters were played with much more caution.
Rohit Sharma, however, was undone by a lazy stroke at the cutter for the third time in the series. Dhawan and Kohli set up a 75-run partnership until the latter was bowled while going for a sweep shot off Shakib Al Hasan's bowling.
Afterwards, Masharafe ended the retaliation by Dhoni and Dhawan, thanks to Nasir Hossain's stunning catch at short midwicket to remove Dhawan. He smashed 10 fours in his 75 off 73 balls, his second consecutive fifty in the series. Dhoni's 93-run stand with Ambati Rayudu was significant in propelling the side past 300 for the first time in the series. Dhoni smacked six fours and one six in his 69 off 77 deliveries before he was dismissed by a Mashrafe leg-cutter. Suresh Raina kept up the rhythm by hitting a quickfire 38 off 21, including three fours and two sixes. Raina’s all-round effort earned him the man of the match award.
