Eid-ul-Fitr is likely to be a wet day this year according to the Met forecast yesterday. Though Eid may be celebrated either on Wednesday or Thursday depending on the sighting of the moon, the Met office warned that there will be light to moderate rainfall in Dhaka and heavy showers in the southern part those days. It further said the current spell of rain would continue till today and then slow down for some time on Wednesday, but only to come back later.
Meanwhile, Dhaka received 13 mm of rain within six hours from 6 am to 12 noon yesterday, following heavy overnight showers measuring 58mm. Sitakunda in south-east region received 111mm showers, while neighbouring Chittagong recorded 46 mm of rain yesterday. The port city had received 127mm rain Sunday. After lying moribund since its arrival in the country on June 17, the monsoon system has suddenly become hyperactive, leading to outburst of rains since Saturday. The inactive monsoon had resulted in 29 per cent less than normal precipitation in June, according to the Met office.
