Issues related to bilateral trade, investment, technical cooperation and connectivity in terms of road, air and seaports are going to dominate the first ever Foreign Office Consultations (FOC) between Bangladesh and Thailand to be held in the capital today.
Besides, employment of Bangladeshi workers in Thailand, introduction of Buddhist circuit tourism between Bangladesh and Thailand, cooperation in defence, culture and sports and collaboration in region will also be discussed, foreign ministry officials said yesterday.
The issue of irregular migration is also likely to come up for discussions, they said.
Foreign Secretary Shahidul Haque will lead the Bangladesh side to the talks at the state guest house Padma while the Thai delegation will be headed by Thai Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs (Foreign Secretary) Norachit Sinhaseni. The nine-member Thai delegation is already in the town to take part in the consultations, said the officials.
Senior officials of the foreign ministry received the Thai delegation at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in the capital yesterday.
The Thai delegation includes Director General and other senior officials of Department of South Asian, Middle East and African affairs and Director of Thailand International Cooperation Agency (TICA).
The consultation is being taken place based on a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the two countries on the establishment of bilateral consultations between the foreign ministries signed during the Dhaka visit of former Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra in 2012.
The foreign secretary and his Thai counterpart will hold a joint briefing after the talks. Thai Permanent Secretary Sinhaseni is also scheduled to meet Foreign Minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali at his office. The Thai team is due to leave Dhaka tonight.
