The selectors led by Minhajul Abedin Nannu chalked a plan to bolster the pipeline of the Test players in a bid to earn considerable success in the longer version format, an arena where the country still remains vulnerable.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) had already disseminated the message that they want to emulate the success of limited version cricket in which the country is now a forced to be reckoned with. In line with BCB’s aspiration, the selectors took some bold steps in order to create strong set up for the Test cricket.
In his first assignment as chief selector, Minhajul Abedin Nannu however brought back three cricketers—Shahriar Nafees, Rakibul Hasan and Suhrawardi Shuvo—for whom the door of national team is believed to be permanently closed. In any sense it was bold step to bring back those three cricketers in the national set up. Even though they are in the 30-member preliminary squad, it seemed all of them are in consideration to be included in the final squad.
The chief selector revealed that they are considering Shahriar Nafees and Rakibul for Test back up while Shuvo will be used as ODI back up. According to him, the inclusion of Nafees and Rakibul would increase the bench strength of Test given both of them are matured enough and experienced.
“We are considering Nafees and Rakibul as our Test back up. If anyone in the Test squad gets injured they can cover up them. Both of them have been playing excellent cricket in the domestic circuit for the last two or three years. So they are rewarded,” Nannu said.
“They looked confident and both of them are experienced and matured. I don’t know whether they will get into the team in the near future but it’s sure they will be in our radar. We think they can give us handy service.”
What pleased the selectors was Suhrawardi Shuvo’s sharp fielding and his ability to bat in any position. Therefore they called up Shuvo for the ODI back up with Arafat Sunny is yet to clear his bowling action. Although Saqlain Sajib is there as specialist left arm spinner, he isn’t as good in batting as Shuvo.
“Shakib is our main spinner in all formats. Taijul Islam is the first choice to accompany him in Test cricket but in ODI cricket we are searching someone to assist him. Yes Saqlain Sajib is there but Shuvo’s batting and fielding is plus point for him.”
But more than the ODI cricket, the focus is on the Test cricket. Nannu indeed changed the past policy of the selectors who showed reluctance to call up aged cricketers. While Rakibul last played in the national five years ago, Nafees last played in 2013. Rakibul is now 28 and Nafees is 31; not that aged but Bangladesh never considered cricketers as such age after his long gap from the national fold.
“Age doesn’t matter if they are fit and perform consistently. We are considering the performance and fitness and both of them showed their excellence in those arenas. So they were given the chance to prove them again,” Nannu said.
