International condemnation of the Friday’s terrorist attack on a restaurant in Dhaka has continued to grow as the country is recovering from the trauma of losing 28 lives on its soil. Of the deceased, there were  nine Italians, seven Japanese, one Indian and one Bangladesh-born US national. The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) condemned the attack, for “which Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL/Da’esh) has claimed responsibility”, according to the UN News Centre website.
In a press statement issued on Saturday, the UNSC condemned “the heinous and cowardly terrorist attack, which resulted in more than 20 Bangladeshi nationals and foreigners, including development workers, killed and many injured.”
The 15-member body reaffirmed that “terrorism in all its forms and manifestations constitutes one of the most serious threats to international peace and security,” underscoring the need for all states to combat such threats by all means.
The council underlined the need to bring perpetrators, organisers, financiers and sponsors of these reprehensible acts of terrorism to justice, urging all states to cooperate actively with all relevant authorities in this regard.
It also reiterated that terrorism in all its forms and manifestations is “criminal and unjustifiable, regardless of its motivation and wherever, whenever and by whomsoever committed,” and “should not be associated with any religion, nationality, civilization, or ethnic group.”
Un Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon also condemned the terrorist attack and stressed the need to intensify regional and international efforts to prevent and combat terrorism, according to his spokesperson.
The UN chief “hopes that those behind this crime will be identified and brought to justice,” his spokesperson said in a statement, adding that Ban “stands firmly by Bangladesh as it confronts this threat and stresses the need to intensify regional and international efforts to prevent and combat terrorism.”
World Tourism Organisation also strongly condemned the hideous attack.
“This is not an attack on Bangladesh but is once again an attack on our way of life, an attack on freedom,” Taleb Rifai, the agency’s secretary-general, said in a statement.
The terrorist attack was also condemned by Mogens Lykketoft, the President of the UN General Assembly.
“We must stand together again terror. This deadly and cowardly act must not go unpunished,” he said.
Lykketoft said he hoped that the perpetrators of this crime would be identified and brought swiftly to justice.
Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser, the high representative for the UN Alliance of Civilisations (UNAOC), reiterated his solidarity with the government of Bangladesh in its efforts to combat all forms of terrorism and violent extremism.
Indian President Pranab Mukherjee has also joined the international community in strongly condemning the Friday’s attack.
“It was with sorrow that I received the news of the terrorist attack that took place in a café in Dhaka yesterday,” he said on Saturday in a message sent to President Abdul Hamid.
“India condemns terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. We believe that there can be no justification for such senseless acts of violence,” read the message.
The people of India stand by the people of Bangladesh at this difficult hour and share their grief, it added.
Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak condemned the attack, describing it as a clarion call for the world to unite against the scourge of terrorism.
Extremists must not be allowed to succeed, he said in a Facebook post.
Canadian High Commissioner in Dhaka Benoît-Pierre Laramée condemned the terrorist attack in the strongest terms.
“Yesterday, Stéphane Dion, foreign minister of Canada, made unequivocally clear that Canada stands with the Bangladeshi people in the face of this act of terror, and reaffirmed the commitment of the government of Canada to fight terrorism,” he said in a statement yesterday.
Russia condemned the incident as inhumane terrorist attack, which has no justification.
“What happened in Dhaka once again proves that it is necessary to immediately combine efforts of all the global community to fight international terrorism,” a Russian foreign ministry statement said on Saturday.
