China will renovate Bangladesh’s largest multipurpose convention centre, Bangabandhu International Conference Center (BICC), built by China about 15 years ago as a sign of friendship with Bangladesh, reports UNB.
Talking to the news agency, an official at the Ministry of Housing and Public Works said Beijing Institute of Architectural Design has completed the design and will send a delegation headed by Wang Siyang to Bangladesh on June 17 to work with Bangladeshi technicians to review and confirm the design and sign the minutes of meetings.
The official said an inter-ministerial meeting on the project of providing simultaneous interpretation equipment of BICC to renovate the conference centre ahead of the 9th Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD) was held on June 6, 2016 at the Housing and Public Works Ministry.
Third Secretary of Chinese Embassy to Bangladesh Lidong Chao along with a Chinese expert was present in the meeting.
The meeting was informed that the Chinese side will start the renovation work at the BICC and complete the work by October 2016.
The Bangladesh side will provide all necessary assistance to the Chinese part in this regard.
It was decided that the Bangladesh side will hand over the full construction site to the Chinese side on July 17, 2016 while both sides will start their own works sharing the same premises.
Housing and Public Works Secretary Md Shahid Ullah Khandaker and Li Guangjun, Economic and Commercial counsellor of the Chinese Embassy at Dhaka, have already signed the Minutes of Implementation regarding innovation of the BICC.
Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC), previously known as Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre and situated at Dhaka’s Sher-e-Bangla, is still considered the only international conference centre of Bangladesh.
The BICC renovation is taking place at a time when Bangladesh is slated to host the Global Forum on Migration Development (GFMD) later this year at the centre.
Nearly 1,000 guests from all around the world are expected to participate in the forum.
The BICC has 17 venues for holding small to large scale events, state functions, social events, seminars, conferences, product launches, annual general meetings, fairs, exhibitions, cultural programs and reality shows.
It has been the venue for many renowned economic, social and cultural events. It has hosted a number of international conferences and summits over the years.
As of 1 July 2012, Bangladesh Services Limited (BSL), owner of Ruposhi Bangla Hotel, is looking after the operation, maintenance and management of BICC.
