Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Nazmul Hassan Papon remained optimistic about England’s tour in the country October next despite a deadly terror attack in a Spanish café in capital’s Gulshan on last Friday left the tour’s fate in uncertain state.
He told reporters at his residence in the capital yesterday that they will adopt a ‘wait and see’ policy regarding the tour as he believed the situation will not be the same after three months when England will visit the country.
After the terror attack, the England & Wales Cricket Board issued a statement saying it will “take the appropriate steps” and call the tour off if security for the team is not guaranteed or the British government warns them it is not safe to travel.
“Their reaction is natural. Even we would have done the same,” said Papon who returned to the country yesterday after the ICC’s meeting in Edinburg.
Last Friday night’s terrorist attack in Dhaka, which left 28 people including 20 foreigners’ dead, have made the ECB concerned.
“We are also shocked and saddened with the incident and totally understand ECB’s concern. The incident left us in shocked state because we never thought this sort of things could be happened here. It is beyond our imagination. For whole Bangladesh it is an unfortunate incident so cricket couldn’t be out of this. We even couldn’t understand how to express sympathy to those who lost their near and dear ones in the heinous incident.”
But Papon thought cricket shouldn’t be hostage for this incident.
“After the attack in Paris, the game wasn’t postponed or stopped. It was held. What is in our favour that, there is still three months left before the series takes place. After three months, the situation will not be the same.”
The BCB boss said that nobody in the world could give a safe place in the world at the moment and so he emphasized on to strengthening the security system.
“Even we don’t know whether England will be safest to play after three months. As I said earlier, we should enhance the security and ensure a proper security to keep the game on.”
England announced the itinerary for the Bangladesh tour only last week and are due to arrive in Dhaka on Sept 30 and will play three one-dayers and two Tests over five weeks.
The ECB’s security specialist, Reg Dickason, is now expected to travel to Bangladesh to review safety and security arrangement and his verdict will decide whether the tour goes ahead.
The BCB however is yet to know when he will arrive into the country to assess the security condition.
Although there is still around three months left before the series takes place and BCB expected the tour to be happened, the English newspaper indicated that it is highly unlikely.
Last year Australia pulled out of a tour to Bangladesh after attacks on Italian citizen Cisar Tabella and their under-19s team did not play at a World Cup in the country a few months later despite giving the assurance of state level security. Later the South African Women’s team also pulled out their scheduled tour to the Bangladesh.
England Under-19 team however took part in the Under-19 World Cup even though Australia pulled out of the tour. During their stay in the country they didn’t make any allegation about the security what could act as a positive matter for BCB’s favour.
