Hearing on the appeal of BNP leader Salahuddin Quader Chowdhury was held for the sixth consecutive day yesterday against his death penalty given by the tribunal for crimes against humanity during the War of Liberation, reports BSS.
A four-member bench of the Appellate Division (AD) of the Supreme Court (SC) headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha started hearing the appeal since June 16 last.
Advocate SM Shahjahan moved the court on behalf of the defense while Attorney General Mahbubey Alam was present at the court for the state.
Earlier on October 29 in 2013, defense lawyer Advocate Joynal Abedin filed the appeal with the AD of the SC against the tribunal's verdict awarding death sentence to Salahuddin.
Another defense counsel Advocate Khandoker Mahbub Hossain said, "The appeal was filed demanding exemption of Salahuddin from the charges for which the tribunal handed him down the death sentence."
Attorney General Mahbubey Alam, however, said, "No appeal was filed from the state side. But, we will submit our arguments before the apex court in favour of the death sentence given by the tribunal during the submission of the defense."
Earlier on October 1 in 2013, a three-member panel headed by ICT-1 the then Chairman Justice ATM Fazle Kabir sentenced Salahuddin to death for crimes against humanity during the War of Liberation in 1971.
Salahuddin was arrested on December 15 in 2010 in connection with a case for arson attack on a vehicle and was later shown arrested on December 9 of that year in a case for crimes against humanity.
