RAJSHAHI: Speakers at a discussion in the city called for proper enforcement of the amended tobacco control law to free the public places and public transports from smoking for the sake of making the public health free from various non-contagious diseases, reports BSS.
They viewed gross violation of the prevailing Tobacco Control Act continues at the restricted areas including public places and transports threatening public health almost everywhere.
There is no alternative to free the transports and places from smoking to protect the non-smokers from passive smoking. Frequent and indiscriminate smoking in the places and transports affect the non-smokers more than those of the direct smokers, they defined.
The observations came at the meeting of Tobacco Control Taskforce Committee held at the conference hall of Deputy Commissioner on Tuesday.
With Deputy Commissioner Mejbah Uddin Chowdhury in the chair, Deputy Director of Department of Youth Development Matiur Rahman, District Children Affairs Officer Mosharraf Hossain Prodhan, Deputy Director of Islamic Foundation Abdus Shakur, Chief Health Officer of Rajshahi City Corporation Dr AFM Anjuman Ara Begum and Project Coordinator of Association for Community Development Ehsanul Amin Emon spoke on the occasion.
The speakers said around 57,000 people die and nearly 4 lakh people become disabled every year in the country due to tobacco-related diseases.
They urged authorities concerned to raise tax on tobacco so that its widespread use could be curbed. They also demanded pictorial message on the packets of cigarettes.
Stressing the need for curbing illicit tobacco trading for protecting the young generation from the curse of smoking they clarified that the massive illicit tobacco trading is being adjudged as wide-ranging smoking aggression among the adolescents and as part of its consequence they are being drug-addicted.
