While the performance of the Dhaka Premier League (DPL) gave the due reward to some of the players, some felt ignored despite going through an excellent season.
Batsman Rakibul Hasan was the front-runner to be included in the 30-member preliminary squad for the upcoming home series against England after scoring the league’s highest 719 runs. He was duly rewarded for the excellent performance that also raised the possibility to bring back the batsman to the national fold after 2011. Suhrawardi Shuvo wasn’t the highest wicket-taker but his 17 wickets in 14 matches along with his handy contribution in batting from middle order to the lower order position what was the thing to rethink about him.
Shuvo and Rakibul were rewarded for their performance duly when selection panel formed the first team after the two-tier selection panel is introduced. But Shmasur Rahman Shuvo may feel ignored despite scoring 1644 runs (NCL and DPL) in the season. Given the performance it is surprising that he didn’t get a place even in the 30-mmeber squad or in the HP squad. Shahriar Nafees however felt lucky to have been nodded again despite scoring just 350 runs in the DPL.
Left-arm spinner Suhrawardi Shuvo’s association with Bangladesh team came to an abrupt end in 2011 also after he played his first and so far the last Test for the country. He kept performing well until a nasty bouncer of Taskin Ahmed during a DPL match sent him to the hospital. He was blown into the forehead and was in critical condition but much to the relief of the cricket fans, his injury was nothing serious. He is still in rest but the news to be drafted into the preliminary squad elated him to huge extent.
Just some days ago, he rued that the sudden injury left his chance to be included into the preliminary squad in jeopardized state but it came as a result of his diehard performance.
Since Arafat Sunny’s action looks faulty yet and it’s tough for the team management to fit him into the national squad again, Shuvo was sent a message to show his talent in the DPL.
Shuvo, played for the Victoria Sporting Club, started performing right from the start of the league with bowling and batting also. But unfortunately he was blown into the forehead against Abahani Limited, a match what head coach Chandika Hathurusingha came to watch. Shuvo was determined to show his talent to Hathurusingha. And he got a perfect platform to display what he possessed. He came to the crease in a moment when Victoria was struggling in the face of some disciplined bowling attack of Abahani. He was trying to bail the side out of danger and playing decently well but the blow left his aspiration unfulfilled. 12 days into the incident, Shuvo is now in the preliminary squad and might heave sigh of relief that what he showcased before being injured didn’t go in vain.
“I was really elated to have been drafted into the preliminary squad. I was trying heart and soul to reach that position. Now it came but the most important thing is to keep performing,” said Shuvo.
He informed that he was recovering from the mental and physical trauma of being blown into the forehead by the nasty bouncer of Taskin Ahmed.
While Shuvo looked certain to make the cut into the final squad also, Roqibul may wait to get his chance.
After having debut in 2008, Roqibul’s consistent performance made him automatic choice into the team. He however went through a bad patch like other batsman and was omitted from the team. But the batsman got emotional by the axe to such extent that he abruptly retired from the team. Later the insistence of his family and national teammates forced him back out of the retirement decision, he started losing his form and subsequently was axed from the team. In the meantime young players cemented their place well to plug Rakibul’s chance to get back to the national team.
It seemed he won’t be considered for the national selection again but the amazing form with Prime Doleshwar Sporting Club brought him back in the track once again.
“I still regretted the sudden retirement. It was wrong decision which backtracked my career but it’s a nice feeling to recover from that,” said Rakibul who got the news of being included into the preliminary squad while he was shopping for the Eid with his family.
“At this stage, I know I have to keep performing. It’s tough to fit yourself in a settled national team. I have to work hard more than what I did to do well in the DPL.”
While the story of Rakibul and Shuvo goes augurs well, it was disappointing story for Shuvo but he promised to keep performing.
“National team isn’t my mind still. I am performing and I want to keep it up. If I keep it up, no one can ignore me. At some stages, definitely I’ll be back.”
