Jamuna erosion takes serious turn in Manikganj

MANIKGANJ: With the rise of water level in two major rivers, erosion has taken serious turn in Daulatpur and Ghior upazilas of the district recently creating untold sufferings and anxieties for the river basin people, reports BSS.
About five hundred families of the upazilas have been rendered homeless with the erosion of the river Jamuna and Dhaleshwari. The river has devoured vast areas of Bachamara and Charkatari unions of Daulatpur upazila and Sridharnagar, Kusta and Mailagi villages of Ghior upazila. The Asrayon Prokalpo of Mailagi and the old connecting road of Ghior-Daulatpur are also on the risk of erosion. A lot of homeless people of Bachamara and Charkatari union of Daulatpur upazila are taking shelter on the temporarily rented lands of others. About four hundred dwelling houses were devoured by the river Jamuna during the last one month.
Some of the homeless people of village Chuadanga, Bachamara Jelepara, Charbharanga, Bachamara Uttarkhando, Kacharipara, Pachuria and Subuddia are spending their days on the char of the Jamuna. Abdul Latif, Chairman of Bachamara Union Parisad said about four hundred families of his union have become homeless during the last one month. He also said ground nuts on about one thousand acres of land was inundated in the month of May and lentil, Aus and Aman on over 700 acres of land were eroded in the second phase which is still continuing.
