A court in Rangpur yesterday sentenced 10 robbers to death for killing a truck driver and a van puller while committing robbery in Rangpur in 2006, reports UNB. Three of the convicts—Abul Bashar, Chandu Mridha and Sobhan Sikder -- were present in the dock when the verdict was delivered while seven others—Manik Miah, Ohidul Islam, Nazrul Islam, Abul Hossain, Shahin Miah, Jasim Uddin and Shahidul Islam—were tried in absentia. According to the prosecution, the convicts hijacked a rice-laden truck on its way to Badarganj upazila of Rangpur from Thakurgaon after it reached Taraganj upazila of Rangpur on March 28, 2006. The bandits strangulated truck driver Paresh Chandra to death and beat up his helper Santosh. The rice-laden truck hit a rickshaw van while being taken away, killing the van puller on the spot and a passenger injured. After examining the records and witnesses, Additional District and Session’s Judge Abu Zafar Mohammad Kamruzzaman handed down the verdict.
