The construction work on Karnaphuli Tunnel will begin soon, Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader told parliament yesterday, reports UNB. “After signing a credit agreement with the Chinese government, the construction work on Karnaphuli Tunnel will begin and it is expected to be completed by 2020,” he said. The minister came up with the disclosure while replying to a tabled starred question from ruling Awami League MP Shamsul Hoque Chowdhury (Chittagong-12). Quader said a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between Bangladesh and China on June 9, 2014 during the Prime Minister’s visit to China. Following the MoU, a commercial agreement was signed with China Communication Construction Limited on the G-to-G basis on June 30, 2015, aiming to construct the tunnel under the Karnaphuli River in port city of Chittagong. On November 24, 2015, the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (Ecnec) approved the much-hyped multilane road tunnel project under the Karnaphuli River involving Tk 8,446.64 crore.
