Thousands of people began to leave the capital yesterday to celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr with their families and relatives at their country homes. As a result, bus terminals, train stations and launch ghats started witnessing a huge crowd since the early hours. Government employees attended their last working day yesterday before Eid. They formed the majority of the homebound people yesterday, as teachers and students have already left the city to avoid hassles on the road. They have been given nine days’ holiday this year, starting from today, to celebrate the festival. Eid-ul-Fitr will be celebrated across the country either on July 6 or 7 this year, depending on the sighting of the moon. The rush of homebound people will continue till the last day before Eid. More rush is expected today as those who could not make it yesterday will leave for their native places today. “I'll spend Eid with my relatives and friends. I’ve already bought an advance ticket for myself. My family members left the city after 15 fasting days,” Rahman Kabir, a government official, told The Independent at Kallyanpur while leaving Dhaka by bus. People thronged the city’s bus terminals, including Gabtoli, Mohakhali and Jatrabari terminals, in the afternoon. There were queues before the ticket counters. Hamid Mian, manager of Shyamoli Paribahan, said, “The rush was normal in the morning. But more people will leave tonight and the rush will continue till tomorrow.” At Kamalapur Railway Station and Sadarghat Boat Terminal, people were seen leaving Dhaka as most of them had bought advance tickets. However, some people mounted on the roofs of trains for their journey. This is a common scene every year before and after Eid. Officials of the transport department said the rush would be relatively less on July 2 and July 3. But there would be bigger crowd on July 4, the last working day for semi-government and private firm employees, they added.
