The BNP leadership has not been able to form full-fledged committees, including the standing committee, even after 100 days of the party national council. This has triggered widespread resentment and frustration among leaders and workers of the party. It has also fuelled bickering among leaders vying for dominance in the party, according to party leaders. The party has so far announced 42 leaders of the executive committees in three phases. But the announcement of other leaders has informally been stopped following the announcement of assistant organising secretaries on April 18. The party council held on March 19 empowered the party chairperson, Khaleda Zia, to form the standing committee and the national executive committee.
Record shows that Khaleda Zia had formed the party's highest policymaking body—the standing committee—only six days after the 5th national council, while the national executive committee was announced after 20 days. Senior party leaders declined to make any comment over the delay in formation of the committees. “We've repeatedly asked the chairperson to announce the new standing committee and executive committee. In fact, we were assured that the committees will be formed soon. But I don’t want to make any comment on it,” said a senior leader. Some leaders alleged that the party leadership has failed to a timely step in this regard. Many of them raised questions about the supposed "reorganisation of the party" and its future course of action. Some of them accused senior leaders of misguiding the chairperson unnecessarily in choosing leaders for the central bodies. Preferring anonymity, a senior BNP leader said there is no possibility of a full-fledged committee before the upcoming Eid. “The committee may be announced after the chairperson’s visit to London, where she may discuss the matter with her son Tarique Rahman,” he added. Khaleda Zia is planning to visit London to meet her son and for medical check-up in the second week of July.
BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, however, said the national executive committee and standing committee might be announced before Eid. “The councillors empowered the chairperson to form the committees and she will do so in time,” he added. BNP standing committee member Goyeshwar Chandra Roy accused the party’s senior leaders of making unnecessary intervention in the issue. “We’re responsible for the delay as many of us have confused the chairperson in selecting party leaders for the standing committee and executive committee. Some of us even opposed the selection of some leaders and lobbied for their own men. This is causing the delay,” he said. He said the formation of the committess would not take more than seven days without such intervention from senior leaders. BNP joint secretary general Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal, however, said that formation of the new committees would take time as the party is being reorganised.
