Dhaka University (DU) is set to celebrate the 95th founding anniversary today with the theme "higher education to resist terrorism and militancy and to flourish humanity".
The university authorities have chalked out elaborate programmes to celebrate the day, popularly known as Dhaka University Day, with pomp and grandeur as different academic buildings have already been decorated with illuminations, reports BSS.
On the eve of the day, Vice-Chancellor Professor AAMS Arefin Siddique issued a message of greetings and invited all to join the celebration programmes of the country's highest seat of learning.
Established in 1921, DU is the oldest university of the country. It was called the "Oxford of the East" during its early years. Today, it is the largest public university in the country, with more than 35,000 students and a faculty of 2000.
The day's programme will begin with the hoisting of the national flag and flags of university and halls at the university mall (Mall Chattar), adjacent to the Administrative Building at 10.15am.
The vice-chancellor will formally inaugurate the daylong programme releasing pigeons and balloons with the singing of the inaugural song.
Prior to that, clad in university day colorful T-shirt, students, teachers, officials and employees from different dormitories will come to the mall in processions with banners and festoons at 10am. Later, they will bring out a colorful procession which will end at the Teacher-Students' Centre (TSC) after parading different campus thoroughfares. A discussion will also be held at the TSC auditorium at 11 am with Prof Arefin Siddique in the chair.
Noted cultural personality and DU Senate member Ramendu Majumder will present a keynote paper on the day's theme.
Pro-vice-chancellor (education) Prof Dr Nasrin Ahmad and Pro-Vice Chancellor (administration) Prof Mohammad Akhtaruzzaman will be present as the guests of honour.
Former vice-chancellors and pro-vice chancellors, professors emeritus, representatives of the teachers, officials and employees associations will deliver welcome addresses. Besides, the Central Library will stage a manuscript exhibition from 10am to 1pm while. Biomedical Physics and Technology Department will display its innovations of medical technology equipment from 10am to 3.30 pm at Curzon Hall on the campus. Besides, different faculties, departments and halls will organise their own programmes.
