73-year-old Yi craftswoman debuts at CSAE

“I alone cannot embroider for all the beauties of the world. I hope that more young people will follow in my steps and pass down this tradi-tional crafts,” said Tang Yinglan, an elderly lady doing hand embroidery at the 4th China-South Asia Expo attracted the attention of many. By virtue of her amazing embroidery techniques, Yi minority embroidery from Jinning has won the applause of many businessmen from both home and abroad.

Jiang Xia, head of Big Difference Company. told reporters that many domestic and foreign merchants are interested in Jinning’s ethnic embroi-dery, especially hand-embroidered clothing. On the first day of the Expo, the company received loads of orders from overseas exhibitors.

Surrounded by myriad ethnic cos-tumes, the 73-year-old Tang Yinglan, the company’s embroidery advisor, showcased her skills. Under her hands, dragons and phoenixes soar vividly among the clouds. And under her patient guidance, young appren-tices and visitors also attentively learned stitching. Tang’s embroidery works have been presented to guests worldwide as gifts, and their photos have been collected in a number of books on local ethnic craftsmanship.

As an advisor to the Big Differen-cy Company, Tang is responsible for mobilizing local women, as well as the company’s employees, to learn and pass down Yi embroidery skills. Her students can make a living out of such handiwork at home. The training and exchange workshop is currently held on a regular basis in the village.

At the Expo, Tang stitched a flying Yi dragon, which symbolizes good weather and a bumper harvest for the next year. Decorated with a variety of patterned plants and flow-ers, the embroidered dragon looked auspicious and joyful.
