3,280 tonnes of VGF rice
allocated for Gaibandha
GAIBANDHA: The government has allocated over 3,280 tonnes of rice for the distressed and ultra poor of the district on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr under Vulnerable Group Feeding (VGF) programme, reports BSS.
District relief and rehabilitation office source said the rice would be distributed to a total of 1,64,035 VGF card holders of all the seven upazilas, including three municipalities, of the district before Eid-ul-Fitr.
Of the total, 26,814 cards were allocated for Fulchhari Upazila, 28,899 for Sundarganj Upazila, 15,160 for Shaghata Upazila, 28,252 for Gobindaganj Upazila, 15,762 for Sadullapur Upazila, 23,752 for Sadar Upazila and 13,073 for Palashbari Upazila of the district.
Apart from it, 4,621 cards were allocated for Gaibandha municipality and Gobindaganj municipality each and 3,081 cards for Sundarganj municipality, sources said.
Each of the beneficiaries would get 20-Kg of rice so that they could celebrate the forthcoming Eid-ul-Fitr without food crisis, said district relief and rehabilitation officer M Habibur Rahman.
Scholarship cheques
distributed in Mymensingh
MYMENSINGH: Mymensingh Zila parisad distributed education scholarship cheques among the best and talented students in SSC and HSC examination yesterday, reports BSS.
In this connection a function was held at zila parisad auditorium.
Chief Executive of Zila Parishad AHM Lokman distributed the cheques as the chief guest.
A total of 1086 GPA -5 grade students in SSC and HSC examinations of 2015 education year received the cheques.
Each SSC GPA 5 holder received Tk1,500 and each HSC GPA 5 holder received Tk2, 000.
The chief guest called upon the students to maintain their outstanding records in the higher education level.
He said Zila Parishad started the programme for financial assistance to the students for their best results as well as to encourage them to maintain the records and to be worthy citizens.
Officials of the Zila Parishad and guardians of the students were present in the function.
AL office set afire in Jessore
Benapole: Criminals torched the Awami League office of Zirangachha ward and an office of an locally-based cooperative firm in Sharsha upazila of Jessore district early yesterday, reports UNB
Moniruzzaman, officer-in-charge of Sharsha Police Station, said two young men riding a motorcycle came and torched the AL office and the office of ‘Zirangachha Sarbik Gram Unnayan Samabay Samity Ltd’ around 2am.
The loss caused by the fire was estimated at Tk 2lakh.
Later union parishad member Hasanuzzaman, also general secretary of the cooperative firm, filed a case with the police station against unnamed accused.
Bakery fined in Jhenidah
Jhenidah: A mobile court on Monday fined a bakery Tk5,000 on charge of manufacturing low-quality foods in Arappur area of the district town, reports UNB.
The court sources said tipped off, the mobile court led by executive magistrate Sohel Sultan Julkar Nayan Kabir conducted a drive at Hira Bakery in the area in the afternoon. During the drive, the mobile court found that employees of the bakery were making foods in an unhygienic condition without using any safety gear and by using harmful chemicals. Later, the court fined the bakery owner Mukter Hossain Tk 5000.
1 held with Tk1.53 lakh fake notes
Joypurhat: Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in a drive arrested a man along with fake currency notes worth Tk 1. 51 lakh from Haripur village in Sadar upazila on Monday night, reports UNB.
The arrestee was identified as Tofazzal Hossain, 31, a resident of the village.
Major Md Hasan Arafat, camp commander of Joypurhat RAB, said being tipped-off a team of the elite force conducted a drive in the house of Tofazzal at the village around 7.30pm and recovered the fake currency notes amounting to 1,51,800 (283 notes of Tk 500 and 103 notes of Tk 100 denominations. They also sized fake note making machines from the house.
Two pipe guns recovered
Sunamganj: Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in a drive recovered two pipe guns from Dakhshin Arfin Nagar of the city on Monday night, reports UNB.
RAB sources said acting on secret information a team of the elite force led by Additional Police Superintendent Kazi Moniruzzaman and company commander of RAB-9 conducted a drive on the north side of Teghoria government pond in the area around 10.30pm. They recovered the pipe guns in an abandoned condition.
6 women pickpocket jailed

A mobile court here sentenced six women pickpockets to one month jail each at Jamalpur Railway station on Monday. The convicted pickpockets were Jahanara Begum, 45, Mafia Begum, 40, Aujufa Begum, 30, Rabeya Begum, 30, Runa Begum, 28, and Abeda Khatun, 20, of Nachhir Nagar upazila under Brahmanbaria district.
According to Railway police, the woman gang pickpockets were caught red handed by on duty police while stealing money from the passengers in crowded Jamalpur Railway Station on Monday afternoon. Later, the arrested women were produced before the mobile court of executive magistrate Padmasan Singha where he sentenced one month jail each after examining witnesses.
