Good governance shot, says Ershad

UNB

Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad yesterday urged the prime minister to hold a national dialogue with all political parties in the House who do not believe in politics of arson to rescue the country from a severe crisis, reports UNB. “Good governance is not only questioned today, it has been shot,” said the former general depicting the country’s current scenario.
Taking part in a general discussion on the proposed budget in Parliament, Ershad said people cannot avail the benefits of development if good governance does not exist.
“No one is safe today. Thirteen persons have become victims of secret killings since March last. Is this a sign of good governance?” the JP leader questioned. Such a culture of impunity cannot continue for long, Ershad said, adding that “development is impossible without good governance”.
Criticizing Finance Minister AMA Muhith, Ershad said he was Finance Minister under the Ershad regime also, the difference being banks were not looted back then.
“If he (Muhith) can show that banks were looted during my tenure, I will quit politics today,” he added.
He demanded a white paper on various incidents of “looting” and scams of all kinds in the financial sector in recent years.
The former president asked the Finance Minister why he is allowing the criminals involved in the irregularities to hide. “Try them. We are witnessing the culture of impunity.”
He also claimed that the government would be able to place another budget with the money smuggled out abroad.
Depicting the scenario in the banking sector, the JP chairman noted there has been no action against the persons involved in the scams in banks.
Ershad said they all want the freedom of 16 crore people in the country.
“We want their welfare. We want peaceful Bangladesh. We want terrorism-free Bangladesh.”
He said they belong to opposition in Parliament to speak up in favour of people. “People have given us the mandate to find out flaws and shortcomings of the government.”
