BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia yesterday demanded trial of Prime Minister’s son Sajeeb Wazed Joy for his alleged involvement in plundering $ 300m. “Your (Sheikh Hasina) son Joy has plundered $300 million… It is under investigation in America…Joy should be brought back home. He should be put on trial,” she said while speaking at an iftar programme organized by the BNP city unit at the Ladies Club in the capital. The former primer minister criticised the government for arresting journalist Shafik Rehman, saying that he is languishing in jail without committing any crime. “Shafik Rehman, he is a journalist, he does not do politics…What was the fault of Shafik Rehman? The documents related to the plundering of $300m, which is being investigated in the USA, was in his possession,” Khaleda said. Khaleda alleged that her party has become the target of the government as the ruling party believes that they can cling on to power permanently if the BNP can be destroyed. She claimed that there is no good governance, rule of law and safety and security of the people in the country. The BNP leader criticised the recent crackdown by the law enforcers, saying that many people were killed during the combing operation but the real criminals could not be detained. She alleged that the genuine criminals were from the ruling party and for that reason, they were not arrested. The crackdown was carried out as eyewash to the people at home and abroad, she said. Khaleda further alleged that they killed people in the name of crossfire after picking up anyone they chose.
Some 16,000 people were arrested during the operation where over 3,000 were BNP leaders and activists, she claimed. The BNP chief called upon the government to stop such harassments in the name of crackdown and assured them cooperation if the government wants to arrest the real criminals. She also criticised the government for stopping prayer calls in mosques on the pretext of security of the head of the government and questioned the motive behind the move. The BNP chief alleged that the government is busy with plundering while Chhatra League cadres are engaged in grabbing people’s money and properties. She said that the police could not find the trace of a murder case accused, but the same person, as a member of parliament, was able to sign the attendance register kept in parliament. On the other hand, they are arresting BNP leaders and activists from anywhere they wish. This cannot be accepted, Khaleda said. The BNP chairperson called upon the leaders and activists of the city unit of BNP to get united to restore democracy in the country. Presided over by city BNP Convener Mirza Abbas, the function was attended, among others, by BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, and senior party leader Goyeshwar Chandra Roy, Barrister Jamiruddin Sircar, Barrister Rafiqul Islam Miah and Abdul Awal Mintoo.
