Foreign Secretary Shahidul Haque leaves for Myanmar today on a five-day visit as a Special Envoy to the Prime Minister. He is carrying a letter from Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for Myanmar’s State Counselor Aung Sun Suu Kyi, whose responsibility is to contact ministries, departments, organisations, associations and individuals in an official capacity. The dispatching of the country’s top diplomat is aimed to further strengthen the relationship between the two neighbours, said the officials of the foreign ministry. Haque will be the most senior official to visit Myanmar after the new government assumed office in March, they said. The letter of the Prime Minister will carry a message that Bangladesh attaches special importance to its relations with Myanmar and Dhaka intends to take the relationship to a new height, they added. “We give high importance to Myanmar. We intend to have a warm and friendly relationship with our neighbour,” Foreign Secretary Haque said.
