Mystery shrouds over the gruesome murder of Mahamuda Akter Mitu, wife of SP Babul Akter as the authorities concerned are apparently maintaining a tightlipped stance over the mastermind of the killing. Questions have been raised whether an effort was underway to cover-up the real motive behind the killing that triggered a shock-wave across the country. Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) yesterday nabbed two more suspected killers, identified as Ehteshamul Haque Bhola and Monir, from Baklia area in Chittagong.
CMP Additional Commissioner Devdas Bhattacharjee told the media that they had also seized two firearms from the suspects. He said that after quizzing Bhola they had seized a revolver, a pistol and six rounds of bullet from Monir’s residence. Earlier, police arrested Motaleb Mia Washim and Anwar Hossain on Sunday who gave confessional statement before the court of Senior Judicial Magistrate Harun-Or-Rashid. Both confessed that they took part in the killing.
Mahmuda Aktar Mitu was killed on June 5 while she was on her way to drop her son at a bus stop for school.
Meanwhile, family members and relatives of Mitu yesterday urged the authorities concerned to ensure that the perpetrators of the murder would not fell victim to ‘crossfire’ incidents.
If the suspects would be killed in crossfire, the architects of the sensational killing would remain unmasked forever, Mosharaf Hossain, father of Mitu, told The Independent.
Responding to a question, he also said that he had asked Babul regarding the speculations over his link to the murder of Mitu.
But, Babul said he was not interested to talk to anybody on this issue, he added.
Asked whether his son-in-law has resigned from the police, Mosharraf said he was not aware of any such development.
“When I asked him about media queries about his resignation, he told me that journalists should ask this question to the police department,” Mosharraf said. Family members of Babul said that Babul did not have any political affiliation.
Babul’s younger brother Shabul Shabu, Associate Professor of SUST, said that after competing his SSC from Barisal Baniapara High School, Babul Akter got admission to Khulna BL College and later completed graduation from the English Department of Kustia Islamic University. Before joining in police cadre through the 24th BCS, Babul worked in a project of World Bank and National Bank, said Shabu.
