A team of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested five suspects of Tongi double murder with its mastermind from Polashbari in Savar and Tongi on Monday night.
Commander of RAB-1 Lt Col Tuhin Mohammed Masud confirmed the news and said that they were arrested during a raid in the areas from Monday evening to midnight.
The arrested were identified as Mohammed Kamrul Islam alias Kamu, 45, son of late Tamiz Uddin Sheikh of Ershad Nagar area of Tongi in Gazipur, Mohammed Mobarak Hossain, 32, son of Mohammed Jalal Hossain of Dattapara area of Tongi, Mohammed Sagar, 20, son of Mohammed Rustam Miah of Ershad Nagar of Tongi, Mohammed Nazmul, 18, son of Mohammed Mostafa of Deopara area of Sreenagar upazila in Munshiganj district and Mohammed Ali, 25, son of Raham Ali of Ershad Nagar in Tongi.
RAB sources said that among the arrested, Kamrul Islam alias Kamu was the ‘mastermind’ behind the killing and all of others took part in the killing mission. Kamu is accused in 20 cases with different police stations, including for murder and extortion. He has been sentenced to 34 years in jail in some cases.
RAB sources said, on a secret information, a team of RAB -1, led by additional police super Mohammed Mohiul Islam conducted a raid in Dendabor Polashbari area of Savar and arrested Kamu from a room. Later, according to his confession Mobarak, Sagar, Nazmul and Mohammed Ali were arrested from different places of Tongi and Savar. The RAB members also seized a machete and sharp weapons that were used in the murder from Ershad Nagar area of Tongi in Gazipur city.
Mohammed Shariful Islam Sharif, 32, president of Sheikh Rasel Jatiya Shishu Kishur Parishad, Gazipur city’s 49 number ward unit and his associate Jumman Mia, 24 , were hacked to death by miscreants on the night of May 14 .The bodies were recovered from a ditch the next day. Sharif’s mother Yanur Begum filed a case with Tongi Model Police Station against 24 persons. Police arrested 11 suspected from Tongi area after the incident. Among them, seven persons gave confessional statements about their involvement with the murder, said, Aminul Islam, officer in charge (Investigation) of Tongi model police station.
