BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia yesterday called upon Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to follow UK premier David Cameron and immediately step down from power paving the path for holding a free, fair and inclusive general election under a nonparty caretaker government.
“Look at Britain and take a lesson from them…Their prime minister announced his resignation honouring the peoples’ mandate through the referendum. Arrange for a neutral poll following the path shown by Britain,” she said while speaking at an iftar mahfil organised by the Agricultural Association of Bangladesh, a pro-BNP organisaiton of agriculturists, at the Ladies Club in the capital.
The former premier said people of Bangladesh also want to see a change in the government.
“You are not elected by the people. So, you should tender your resignation and arrange an election immediately thinking about the people. Give up your power to the government of people through holding a free and fair poll,” she said.
“We will accept polls result if people don’t want us. And if they (people) give their mandate to us, we will form the government,” she added.
The BNP chief accused the government of destroying all institutions through politicization and said if they are voted to power they would give priority to agriculture.
Khaleda alleged that many good officials have been removed due to politicization.
Krishibid Anwarunnabi, convenor of the organisaiton, presided over the function.
