Stress on empowering local govt institutions

RAJSHAHI: Collective efforts of all government and non-government organizations concerned has become an urgent need for making the Local Government Institutions (LGIs) properly empowered and effective, speakers at a meeting here mentioned on Sunday, reports BSS. They viewed time has come to bring coordination, transparency and accountability in all the development works being implemented for empowering the LGIS so that they can provide quality services to the grassroots people.
The observations came at a coordination meeting with development programmes relating to empowerment of LGIs held at Hotel Mukta International in Rajshahi city. Local Governance Programme- Sharique of Helvetas Swiss Interco operation-Bangladesh organised the event in association with Swiss Development and Cooperation (SDC). Heads of all the SDC partner organisations attended the meeting devising ways and means on how to attain desired yield in this regard.
The meeting told that various government and non-government organisations are now implementing different projects for welfare of the grassroots people through LGIs. So, there is no alternative to empowerment of the local bodies through promoting more democratic, transparent, inclusive and effective system.
Deputy Director of Local Government Division Dr Dewan Shahriar Firoj and Divisional Facilitator of Upazila Governance Project Rafiqul Islam addressed the discussion as chief and special guests respectively with Mustafizur Rahman Khan, President of Shaw-Unnayan, in the chair.
During his concept paper discussion, Aung Chow Hla, Regional Coordinator of the project, gave an overview of the present local government bodies its activities, problems and prospects. Various other matters like contribute to the government initiatives and further collaborations among the GO and NGOs interventions towards uplifting the local people were discussed elaborately. Apart from this, the meeting discussed some key issues including enhancing capacity for women leadership roles in local government institutions both Union Parishad and Upazila Parishad structures, mobilize citizens groups to influence their service delivery, mainstreaming pro-poor and pro-women local governance practices and collaboration and interaction. District Facilitator of LGSP Abu Hena Mostofa Kamal, Regional Manager of PripTrust Saiduzzaman Sipon, Editor of Daily Sonar Desh Akbarul Hassan Millat, Director of Barendra Unnayan Prochesta Foyzullah Chowdhury and Regional Manager of VERC Tapan Kumar Shaha also spoke.
