Psychologists in educational institutions

The appointment of psychologists in the educational institutions will be a valuable addition in the grooming of students

Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid recently said that the government is thinking to appoint psychologists in the educational institutions to provide counseling to the boys and girls during their adolescent period.  According to a report in this newspaper yesterday, the minister also urged the teachers and guardians to look after the children in building up their physical and mental development along with their education. At the initial stage training will be provided to a teacher of each school regarding the adolescent counseling till necessary numbers of professional psychologists are available.
Students are the future of a nation. If they can be properly groomed up through imparting the right kind of education, their parents and relatives and the country can expect a lot from them. What is needed is proper guidance and counseling. There are parents and guardians who are conscious enough and hence there is little chance for their wards to go astray. But all are not equally conscious and cannot keep a vigil on their children or are not in a position to do so. In such cases, there is chance for their wards to be misguided and spoiled.
Student life is the best time of human life. Those who can utilise this life properly can shine in later life. Alongside studies, physical and mental fitness is required for prospering in life. So a student should also give importance to sports and cultural activities absence of which can make life dull and monotonous.   The appointment of psychologists in the educational institutions can help groom up students in a proper way. They will be able to identify the problems facing the students of the educational institutions. But the appointment should not be made on political considerations. The authorities should take care so that genuine psychologists are appointed for serving the purpose of the government. Otherwise, appointment for appointments’ sake will be an exercise in futility.
The appointed psychologists will have to work strenuously for promoting the hidden talents of students. Only their mere presence in the educational institutions will not do. The present government has done a lot for the development of the education sector. A lot more should be done. The appointment of psychologists in the educational institutions will be a valuable addition to the sector.
