Load shedding comes back

As the mercury peaked with the summer heat, electricity demand in the country crossed 9,000 MW yesterday, causing load-shedding in many areas. According to Power Division data, the electricity production reached a record high 8942 MW on Saturday night. However, yesterday morning, the demand of electricity superseded the production and triggered load-shedding in many areas. Power cuts were experienced in many parts of the country including in the capital Dhaka. Sources with Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) said a 300 MW unit in Ashuganj Power Plant was repaired and is currently under test run, which caused further disruption in power supply. Power supply from the plant resumed later and the situation went back to normal. Besides, the electricity demand shot up due to excessive heat yesterday that caused many to run air-conditioners, causing extra power load. Bangladesh currently has a net (de-rated) installed capacity for electricity generation of about 9,600MW. But actual generation is less than that.
