People become victims of killings: Moudud

STAFF REPORTER

BNP standing committee member Barrister Moudud Ahmed yesterday assured that none would be victims of extrajudicial killings, if BNP voted to power.
“People are becoming the victims of killings and enforced disappearances as there is no government with accountability. If BNP voted to power, none will be the victims of enforced disappearance, extrajudicial killings. None will be kept in the prisons without trial,” he said while speaking at a discussion meeting.
The BNP organised the meeting at Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh auditorium on the occasion of International Anti-Repression Day.
Barrister Moudud said, “If we believe in rule of law, we would bring to an end to enforced disappearance, extrajudicial killings, and detaining people unjustifiably, we have to do it. Other wise the people will hate us.”
Referring to the election manifesto of the ruling Awami League that it would stop the extrajudicial killings if voted to power, the former law minister said they (AL) have forgot its own electoral commitment. “They have made the commitment only to elude the voters,” he said.
The BNP policymaker claimed that militancy and extremism have emerged in the country as “there is no government representing the people.”
“People are being victims of the extrajudicial killings and enforced disappearance. Those who lost their near and dear ones only they understand how were the pain of it,” he said.
Moudud observed that the current political impasse could be resolved only by establishing a government of representing people though holding a free, fair and impartial election.
“The militancy and extremism will be ended if a government representing the people is established. It would also end, killing, enforced disappearance and extrajudicial killing,” he said.
The BNP leader said his party hates extremism and militancy but conspiracy is on to brand the BNP as a party of extremist.
Presided over by BNP vice chairman Selima Rahman, the meeting was also addressed, among others, by BNP chairperson’s adviser Ahmed Azam Khan, senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, Barrister Mahbubuddin Khokan and Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal.
