40,000 people marooned by flood in Kurigram

KURIGRAM: Nearly 40,000 people have been marooned by monsoon flood in Kurigram district, officials and local people said yesterday, reports BSS. They said onrush of water from the upstream have flooded over 100 chars in Brahmaputra basin creating untold sufferings of the people. Water Development Board sources said the Darla River is flowing near danger mark with a rise of 10 centimeters water in the past 24 hours.  The Teesta marked rise by 22 cm while 33 cm were recorded rise in Dhudkumar River and 22 cm in Brahmaputra River in the past 24 hours, they added. Strong current of the Dharla River collapsed a flood embankment in Bangturghat area under Kurigram Sadar upazila inundating 10 villages, Khairul Islam Mandal, a Union Parishad member, said. Mahfuzar Rahman, an official of Kurigram Water Development Board said, “We are launching our efforts to repair embankment to protect the people from flooding.”
