SP Babul quizzed over wife’s murder

In a dramatic development in the early hours yesterday, Superintendent of Police Babul Akhter was taken to the Detective Branch office in the capital for interrogation about his wife’s murder. A team of police picked Babul at around 1 am on Sunday from his father in law’s house in the capital triggering various rumours. He returned home at around 5 pm yesterday and told the media that he was taken to interrogate the suspects who were arrested by the Chittagong Metropolitan Police.
Though police was tightlipped about the incident, at around 12 pm Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan told reporters that Superintendent of Police Babul Akhter was taken into police custody for interrogation about his wife’s murder.
“We’re still confident we’ll be able to arrest those involved in the brutal killing of Babul Akhter’s wife. As he (Babul) was a police officer in Chittagong he knows many people there,” he said.
The minister further said, “So, he’s being quizzed to confirm the identities of those arrested in connection with the murder.”
Asaduzzaman said this to reporters after attending a programme at Dhaka Club.
Asked whether Babul is being interrogated suspecting his involvement in his wife’s murder, the minister parried the question saying it is not

the time to make such comment.
Police picked Babul up from his father-in-law’s Bhuiyan Para residence in the city’s Khilgaon area early Saturday.
“Deputy Commissioner (Motijheel division) Anwar Hossain along with officer-in-charge of Khilgaon Police Station Moinul Hossain came to our house around 1:05 am and took Babul with them saying the IGP wanted to talk to him,” said Md Mossharraf Hossain, father-in-law of SP Babul.
“We’ve repeatedly tried to contact Babul over mobile phone, but haven’t got any response from his side. Even the OC hasn’t picked up the phone,” Mosharraf Hossain said.
The OC Khilgaon or the DC Motijheel could not be reached over phone despite repeated attempts as they did not pick up the phone.
When contacted over the matter, Inspector General of Police AKM Shahidul Haque said, “Babul was not arrested. He is the plaintiff in the case. He is being interrogated for getting some important information regarding the case.”
Asked whether he was arrested over the killing of Mitu, SP Babul said, “Who said that? Those who are investigating called me to discuss the case.”
Meanwhile, additional police commissioner (Crime and Operation) of Chittagong police Devdas Bhattacharjee said, “Three youths riding on the motorcycle have been identified in the killing of Mitu. Police is not revealing the identity of their names for the sake of investigation. Police is also trying to arrest others in the murder.”
Asked about the arrest of the killers of Mitu, he said, “Police is trying to arrest them.”
When asked about the progress of the case, he said, “We’ll inform you (Media) within two or three days.”
Unidentified miscreants gunned down SP Babul’s wife Mahmuda Khanam at GEC intersection of the port city of Chittagong on June 5 morning while she went there to drop her son Mahir Akhter, 7, for a bus of Chittagong Cantonment Public School and College.
A case was filed with Panchlaish Police Station of Chittagong Metropolitan Police, accusing three unidentified people at night the same day.
After getting promotion as SP, Babul Akhter was attached with the Police Headquarters for his posting from CMP several days before his wife was murdered.
