Although the Eid shopping in various posh markets of the city has gained momentum, the shopping at the footpaths and hawkers markets of the city is yet to make a brisk business.
Footpath markets in the city are situated in Station Road, Shaheb Bazaar, Rajshahi court market, Bihari Colony, Luxmipur market, RDA market, Bindur More and New Market areas.
The selling of goods in most of the footpath markets is not satisfactory and the salesmen of those make-shift shops are still spending idle times.
Near about fifty garments, cosmetics and shoe shops are housed at the footpath beside sericulture factory at station road. The owners of those shops said the customers of those shops are mainly from the ultra-poor, labourer section. They used to purchase Eid clothing and other gifts for their children and near and dear ones at the last leg of the
Ramadan.
Meraj Mollah, a footpath shop owner at station road, said most customers of the footpath shops belonged to day labourers, rickshaw and van pullers, tempoo drivers, helpers of trucks, buses, hotel boys, house maids, firm hands and even beggars. They are yet to collect money for purchasing of Eid gifts for their children and relatives.
Moreover, the price of every commodities have been shot up during this Ramadan, as a result, purchasing capacity of the poor people has been dropped, Meraj further informed. Jamil Hossain, another shop keeper of the market, said now the customers of the footpath markets mainly belonged to poor farmers from rural areas.
He said that the farmers are now busy transplanting and taking care of their paddy, planting other crops which involved a huge sum of money. As a result, only a few poor farmers dare to visit city markets to purchase clothes for their children and relatives.
Moreover, he further said now days there are garments, cosmetics, vermicelli and shoe markets in every rural hats and bazaars. So, most of the poor people make their Eid shopping from the local markets.
Traders at the hawkers and the foot path markets said it was very puzzling that even after the salary and Eid bonuses, the selling of goods at their shops remained bleak.
They expressed their disappointed that they have invested a huge sum of money to purchase 'quality products' at their shops.
Many of them have also drawn loan from money lenders at a high interest rate. But, the selling at their shops is yet to get momentum. They said, they will incur a huge loss if such trend in selling continues further.
