Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Chairperson Khaleda Zia yesterday alleged that suspected militant Faizullah Fahim did not die in crossfire, but was killed by police after they had taken him into custody and handcuffed him.
“This was a totally managed incident. He (Fahim) did not die in crossfire but was killed. The police were involved in the killing and it means that Hasina was involved in it, as she is the home minister (Asaduzzaman Khan is the current home minister). We want to say that the trial of those responsible for the killing of an innocent person should be held,” she said while speaking at an iftar mahfil at a city hotel in Gulshan.
On June 15, Fahim was caught by local people while fleeing with his accomplices, after hacking Ripan Chakrabarty, a lecturer in mathematics at Government Nazimuddin College, inside his residence. Fahim was remanded in a case filed for his suspected attempt on the life of the college teacher in southern Madaripur district.
The former premier alleged that the Awami League, the Chhatra League, and the police were involved in the crimes that are occurring in the country.
“Ordinary people and BNP leaders and activists are being repressed. They are not getting justice and treatment in prisons. BNP leaders and activists are arrested from the prison gates as soon as they are released,” she further alleged.
Khaleda also accused the government of carrying out repression on opposition leaders and activists, including that of the BNP, under the pretext of carrying out a crackdown. She said the BNP leadership was carrying out its movement not to become prime minister, ministers or MPs, but to reestablish democracy in the country.
