RANGPUR: The present government is committed to reach cost-free legal services to extremely poor people by making the legal aid services programme successful, speakers at a seminar here said, reports BSS.
The District Legal Aid Committee (DLAC) organised the seminar on “Providing Government’s Legal Aid Services” at conference room of Rangpur Judge Court premises in the city on Wednesday afternoon.
The National Legal Aid Services Organisation of the Justice Division under the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs has been implementing the Government’s Legal Aid Project to provide cost-free legal aid to the poor of the country.
District and Sessions Judge of Rangpur and Chairman of the DLAC Md Manjurul Basit presided over the seminar.
The learned judges, panel lawyers, officials, DLAC Members, police officers, lawyers, human rights and NGO activists, public representatives, professionals, civil society members, journalists and elite participated.
Special Judge (District Judge) of Rangpur Naresh Chandra Sarker, Chief Judicial Magistrate Mostaq Ahmed, Additional District & Sessions Judges Abu Jafar Md Kamruzzaman and Md. Rokanuzzaman, President of Rangpur Ainjibi Samity Advocate Abdul Haque Pramanik, Senior District Information Officer Humayun Kobir, Additional District Magistrate KM Maruf Hassan, Assistant Police Super Saifur Rahman, Panel Lawyer Advocate Masum Gawhar, justice seeker Ashraful Islam, journalist Siddikur Rahman, addressed among others.
District Legal Aid Officer and Senior Assistant Judge Marjia Khatun informed the seminar about the statistics of receiving applications from the poorer section people from 2002 to 2014 and approved by the DLAC to assist them in getting justice.
“A total of 51 cases have been disposed of and 441 other cases given approvals for trial during the past five months from January to May, 2016 alone in the district under the Government’s Legal Aid Project free of costs,” she added.
Taking part in the discussion, the speakers narrated the mass publicity on the process of providing legal aid to the poor for ensuring justice for them through appointing lawyers free of cost under government assistance on behalf of them.
Highly lauding the initiative, they thanked the government for taking the responsibility of providing legal aid services to the extremely poor and distressed people to ensure justice for them.
