Speakers call for patronising renewable energies

RAJSHAHI: All the government and non-government organisations concerned should come forward and patronise the sector of renewable energies for best uses of its existing potentialities, speakers at a public dialogue here said, reports BSS. They highlighted the enormous aspects of the sector in both rural and urban areas of the region including its vast Barind tract and said there should have adequate measures of making those accesses to the poor and marginalized population.
Bangladesh Resource Center for Indigenous Knowledge (BARCIK), a collective initiative for participatory research, policy advocacy and campaign, organized the dialogue styled “Energy and Poverty and Poor Peoples Participation to Renewable Energies” held at Tanore Upazila Parishad auditorium in the district on Wednesday.
During his keynote presentation, Shahidul Islam, Barind Region Coordinator of BARCIK, mentioned instead of depending on only the fossil fuel emphasis should be given on enriching the renewable energy sources to face the energy challenges.
Availability of energy from different sources is vital for the present life in meeting the challenge of the ever-increasing demand for energy. He emphasized the need for wide-ranging use of energy efficient products to reduce the existing pressure on power demands.
He laid stress on using energy efficient electrical appliances to reduce electricity cost coupled with energy conservation which is essential for addressing the energy crises. All concerned should work together for building social awareness towards judicious use of fossil fuel and ending its misuse. Besides, the issue of converting the irrigation system into solar power-based one should be taken into consideration immediately. Upazila Chairman Emran Ali Mollah, Vice-chairman Abdur Rahim and Pourosova Mayor Mijanur Rahman also spoke. More than 40 people comprising teachers, media men, government and non- government officials concerned, members of the civil society and other stakeholders attended the meeting sharing their views on the issue in open discussion.
