Some 1.66 crore mobile SIMs across the country were not registered under the biometric method, according to a statistics placed by State Minister for Posts and Telecommunications Division Tarana Halim in Parliament yesterday, UNB reports.
“Now the number of mobile subscribers (SIMs) is 13,26,49,158 in the country. As of June 4, a total of 11,60,00,000 subscribers verified their SIMs under the biometric method,” she said.
Tarana came up with the statistics in the House replying to a tabled starred question from Jatiya Party MP Mohammed Ellias (Cox’s Bazar-1). The deadline for biometric SIM registration that started on December 16 last expired on May 31 last.
In reply to another starred question from AL MP Firoja Begum Chino (Reserved Seat-33), the state minister said the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Corporation (BTRC) has formed a team to curb cyber crimes in the country.
“The BTRC formed ‘Bangladesh Computer Security Incident Response Team’ (BDCSIRT), which helps curb internet-based crimes,” she said. Tarana said anti-state and anti-religion contents are now blocked through International Internet Gateway (IIG).
Other objectionable contents are also blocked through IIG following complaints received from the common people, she added.
The junior minister said purchasing internet safety platform –Internet Safety Solution (ISS) -- is under process for strengthening the cyber-monitoring system.
