Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Md Asaduzzaman Mia yesterday warned that the law enforcers would use their firearms if necessary to curb crimes like snatching and extortion in the capital during the Eid-ul-Fitr.
“Police have been directed to shoot, if necessary, to resist extortion, mugging or theft during the Eid. The criminals would not be spared,” said the DMP chief at a views exchange meeting on law, order and traffic management held in Gabtoli area of the capital.
“Some days back, law enforcers were deployed near bank branches to prevent incidents of snatching. Our intelligence people are alert now. If incidents of money stanching takes place, we would use the guns as the law says police can fire bullets to protect life and property,” he said. However, Asaduzzaman assured that police will follow the law while firing any bullet.
About the recent incidents of ‘shootout killings’, the DMP commissioner said, “Police never engage in crossfire. The function of police is to arrest the criminals and to hand them over to the law. But police are forced to respond when they are attacked during any operation to arrest criminals. Then, one or two criminals died in shooting and police personnel were also injured.”
