DoE fines 9 factories Tk 86 lakh

The Department of Environment (DoE) yesterday slapped a total of Tk 85.63 lakh fine against nine factories located in Naraynganj, Rajbari and Chittagong for polluting the environment. Director (monitoring and enforcement) of the DoE Md Anwar Hossain Hawlader fined the factories after a hearing at DoE headquarters in the city’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar. Earlier, the enforcement wing of the DoE had visited several industries including washing, dyeing, and paper mills in those three districts. During the visits, DoE officials found many industries running operations without any effluent treatment plant (ETP) and polluting the environment through discharging pollutants into the open through bypass drains.
Later, the enforcement wing issued notices to the violators for hearings. After the hearing, four companies  in Chittagong -- Golden Horizon Ltd was fined Tk 5.93 lakh, Asia Pacific Paper Mills was fined Tk 12.48 lakh, Four H Dyeing Tk 24.92 lakh and S Alam Super Edible Oil Mills Tk 2.82 lakh. Linde Bangladesh located in Tejgaon was fined Tk 3.84 lakh, Rokeya Rahman Kabir Women Welfare complex in Rajbari was fined Tk 2.14 lakh, Bangladesh Dyeing in Narayanganj was fined Tk 3.12 lakh and the Central Effluent Treatment Plant of Savar was fined Tk 14 lakh. Aside from fines, those factories were also asked to remove bypass drains and install ETP as per the Bangladesh Environment Protection Act 1997. DoE director Anwar Hossain said that their drives against the industries will continue. “It doesn’t matter how large the industries are, if they violate the rules, they will be fined,” he said.
