RMG worker hacked dead
A garments factory worker was hacked to death by miscreants at Jamgora Kanthaltala in Ashulia early Thursday.
The deceased was identified as Sumon Shikder, 30, a worker of The Rose Dress Factory and son of Aftab Ali Shikder, a resident of the area.
Officer-in-charge of Ashulia Police Station Mohsinul Kadir said two unidentified men attacked Sumon as he came out of his house to respond to the call of nature in the dead of night.
At one stage, the attackers stabbed Sumon indiscriminately, leaving him seriously injured.
He was rushed to a local hospital where doctors declared him dead. Police recovered the body and sent it to Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue for an autopsy. A case was filed in this connection.
US embassy’s new website
The US Embassy on Thursday launched a new website in order to provide more user-friendly access to information about Bangladesh-US partnership, embassy programmes, and applying for visas.
The website features content about on-going initiatives and useful reference information, such as speeches and press releases. The new website address is https://bd.usembassy.gov/.
“We hope Bangladeshis will find the new website easy to navigate and engaging,” said chargé d'affaires David Meale.
Drug trader gets 10-yr jail
A man was sentenced to 10 years jail by a court in Rajshahi on Wednesday on charge of possessing 250 grams of heroin around three years back in the district.
Judge of the Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal Golam Ahmed Khalilur Rahman found him guilty of the charge and pronounced the verdict in his presence.
The convict identified as Mikail Hossain, 25, was also fined Taka 5,000 and in default to suffer two months more behind the bar. According to the prosecution story, in brief, is that an operation team of Department of Drugs and Narcotics Control arrested Mikail Hossain and seized 250 grams of heroin after searching his body in Muraripur area of Paba Upazila on August 30, 2013.
Subsequently, a case had been lodged with the concerned police station. On completion of investigation, police pressed charges accusing him.
After examining the recorded deposition of six prosecution witnesses and other relevant evidences the tribunal handed down the verdict.
Food shop fined Tk 80,000
A food shop was fined Taka 80,000 on Wednesday in Rajshahi city on charges of manufacturing and selling unhygienic and sub-standard food.
Led by Executive Magistrate Sharmin Ara, a team of the Department of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP) conducted raids at BSCIC estate area and found food items of Joutha Bazar sub-standard.
Subsequently, the team fined the shop Taka 80,000 and realised the fines instantly.
Mahbubur Rahman, Deputy Director of DNCRP, said such drive against the violations of consumers’ rights will continue in the coming days.
Five JCD leaders arrested
Police arrested five Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal leaders of Titumir Government College Unit including its president and secretary from Banani area on Wednesday.
The arrested were identified as Taslim Ahsah Masum, President of the Titumir College JCD Unit, Nur-e-Alam Rasel, Senior-Vice President, Aminul Haque Himel, Secretary and two members- Masud Rana and Saiful Islam, Officer-in-Charge Banani Thana M Salahuddin told BSS.
A team of Police arrested them and recovered seven cocktails from them, he added.
