A Chittagong court yesterday sentenced to life term rigorous imprisonment to two people for killing a tea businessman at Kanongopara under Boalkhali upzila of Chittagong in 1996.
Nur-e-Alam, Additional (fifth) District and session Judge handed down the verdict.
The life-term sentenced convicts were identified as Sujit Chowdhury and Joydip Dutta. The duo is absconding now after securing bail from the court. “The court awarded the duo life term imprisonment as the allegations under CrPc 302/34 brought against them were proved,” said Lokman Hossain Chowdhury, additional district public prosecutor (PP).
The victim Jagadish Chandra Singh was a tea businessman of Chittagong’s largest wholesale market Khatunganj. On August 15, 1996 night the victim was going to home; when he was reached near at Laxman Digipar Shiva Temple the accused duo shot dead Jagadish, said court sources.
The two accused were drug addicts. They usually used to come in the family temple of Jagadish to take drugs. Jagadish protested as profane of the temple destroying the duo. Being aggrieved the duo shot dead Jagadish, said court sources. On August 16, victim’s wife filed a murder case with Boalkhali police station. Police submitted charge sheet of the case before court on January 12, 1997. In 2000 charge was framed against the convicts. After examining the records and 10 witnesses the court handed down the verdict, said the PP.
