An alleged criminal was killed in a reported gunfight with members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in Haidarabad area of Gazipur city early yesterday, reports UNB.
The deceased was identified as Mamun, a resident of Tongi area.
A patrol vehicle of Rab-1 stopped at Haidarabad in the early hours after a group of 2-3 criminals signalled for help in the guise of passers-by, said a RAB press release.
However, the hoodlums, equipped with firearms, encircled the RAB vehicle as soon as it reduced the speed.
In the meantime, another patrol vehicle of the elite force reached the spot.
Sensing danger, the gangsters opened fire on the RAB vehicles, forcing the crime-buster team to fire back that triggered a gun battle.
After the brief gunfight that also left two RAB men injured, the elite force team found Mamun lying on the ground while his other accomplices managed to flee.
Mamun was taken to Shaheed Tajuddin Medical College Hospital where on-duty doctors declared him dead.
A pistol, an MG with two bullets and two machetes were also recovered from the spot.
Mamun was a listed terrorist and wanted in several cases, said officer-in-charge of Joydevpur Police Station Khandakar Rezaul Hasan.
